Valentine's Day. Granny's 74th birthday. I called granny. During Computer Club I typed up a price list for mom's business. I watched Leafs 6 Whalers 6.

Monday February 12, 1990

Lincoln's Birthday holiday in the U.S. We had the day off school. I went to the L.A. Kings hockey practice, and went to the Sheraton Hotel before and waited for Gretzky in the lobby. He signed my LA Kings poster.

Sunday February 11, 1990

I sat at home and watched TV all day. I watched the Flames beat the Rangers 5-2. Then I watched the NBA All-Star game. The East beat the West 130-113. Magic Johnson was the MVP.

Saturday February 10, 1990

Jordi and I went to a bunch of hockey card stores downtown. Buntman, Guy, Sesel, Brad, Jordi and I went to see Hard To Kill at Town & Country. We then stopped by Lime Rickey's.

Friday February 9, 1990

No school! Slept in. Did homework. I went to Guy and Jordi's hockey game with Buntman, then all of us went to hang out at Golden Star. I slept over at Jordi's place.

Thursday February 8, 1990

Last day before mid-term break. Grub day. I picked up my new baggy GAP jeans (that were being altered). We played basketball in gym class. I went to Brian's house after school.

Egg salad for lunch. We played basketball after school. Watched Leafs 7 Blues 1.

I had 2 tests: English B and Science. I finished writing my essay for History class. I got 84.6% on my Math mid-term exam. Chili for lunch. We played floor hockey in gym and I got 4 goals and 7 assists. Watched TV.

Monday February 5, 1990

I got 9/15 on my Accounting test. Played basketball at lunch. I went to buy hockey cards after school. Did homework. Watched TV.

I went to North York Public Library to work on my essay all day. The essay is about the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Watched TV. I chatted on the phone with Gabe for a while. He is loving Saugeen!

Saturday February 3, 1990

Granny went to California on vacation. Brian and I went downtown to the Hilton Hotel to meet the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins, including Mario Lemieux. I went to Town & Country in the evening to see a movie with Buntman.

Friday February 2, 1990

We had fish for lunch. I got an 8/10 on my essay for English A. We had a Math test. I went for a haircut at Peter's after school. Watched the Leafs lose 5-2 to the Red Wings.

I had 2 tests: History and Accounting. We played basketball in gym and then kept playing after lunch. I watched TV and did homework.

Monday January 29, 1990

My general journal was due. A bunch of us grade 10s took on a bunch of grade 11s in floor hockey at lunch. We kicked ass - I had a goal and 3 assists. I watched Larry King with Drew Barrymore as the guest.

[Note: I was particularly interested in this interview because 4 years earlier I had a very brief flirtation with Drew. I know, that sounds like crap, so here are the details as I remember them (anyone from Willowbrook that recalls something different is welcome to leave a comment).

It was a spring day in grade 6 at Willowbrook P.S. and I was kicked out of class for some reason or another. It was the last class of the day, sunny outside, and filming on a new movie with Drew Barrymore close by had started, so I took off and went to the set. I knew they would be filming on Ravencliffe Rd. because my friend Marla had told me all about how her house was rented out for making a Drew Barrymore movie. Remember, E.T. and Firestarter were only a few years prior, so Drew Barrymore was a BIG deal to a 12 year old. Anyway, I made my way over to the set before all the other kids in school and before I knew it I was sitting on the grass chatting with Drew Barrymore! By the time all the other kids showed up she was now filming, but I was there in the front row watching every take. I was in love. Eventually I had to go home for dinner, but before leaving the set I wrote Drew a love letter and promised I would be back on set after school the next day.

When I got home and told my family what happened they all thought I was full of shit. So before sitting down to eat my mom threw Gabe and I into the car and we drove to Ravencliffe just so she could see with her own eyes that they actually were filming a movie in Thornhill! A few hours later the phone rang and it was Marla - "stay off the line (no call waiting then) because Drew is about to call you!" I couldn't believe it when a few minutes later Drew called me. I'm honestly not sure if the call was 2 minutes or 2 hours, but I do recall asking if she knew Ricky Schroder (I was a big Silver Spoons fan at the time!). Anyway, for the rest of the week I would go to the set after school and watch them make The Screaming Woman (the film). That weekend Jason Gold and I went to Marla's house to spend the afternoon with her and Drew. Then Drew asked me to join her for dinner on the coming Tuesday in her Winnebago. On Tuesday I went to the set after school and was waiting for the filming to break, and to have dinner with her, when suddenly I realized it was October 7th - my dad's birthday! There was a family dinner planned, and I needed to be there. I couldn't tell Drew myself, she was in the middle of shooting, so I saw Marla's brother Jeff and told him to convey my apologies.

The next day at school people told me they heard I "stood Drew up" and that she was pissed. I just assumed other kids were jealous of what we had going on and still went to the set after school. However, when I got to Ravencliffe my friend Andrew, that lived on the street, told me it was true. There were a crowd of people around Drew and she was talking smack about me. I turned around, went home, and never went back to the set. My friend Randy ended up "dating" Drew after that. Apparently he even got some action ... I never did.

Here I was 4 years later watching Drew on Larry King Live explaining how she had a drug and alcohol problem ... even at the time that I "knew" her. So that is why it was particularly interesting for me to hear about.]

Super Bowl XXIV. The San Francisco 49ers beat the Denver Broncos 55-10. Montana was the MVP. It took place at Louisiana Superdome, New Orleans.

Saturday January 27, 1990

I went downtown with Jordi, Guy and Brad. All of us then went back to Jordi's house - grabbed Pizza Chef and watched Toronto lose 5-3 to the Habs.

Friday January 26, 1990

We watched another part of the film Macbeth. We did analysis on cow (image) and sheep hearts in Science class. Lasagna for lunch. I watched Cheers.

Thursday January 25, 1990

Did work in Accounting on the computer. I played floor hockey at lunch. Burgers for lunch. Watched TV and did homework.

Wednesday January 24, 1990

Did work on the computer. Played hockey after school. I watched Toronto 7 North Stars 3.

Tuesday January 23, 1990

I got 18/19 on the Math test. We had noodles for lunch. I played floor hockey after school and got a goal and 2 assists. Watched Who's The Boss and The Wonder Years, and did homework.

Monday January 22, 1990

Hot dogs for lunch. We started using computers in our Accounting class. I watched the American Music Awards.

[Note: Milli Vanilli were favourite Pop/Rock New Artist and had the Favorite Pop/Rock Single.]

Sunday January 21, 1990

I watched the 41st NHL All-Star game (hosted in Pittsburgh). Bernie Nicholls was traded just before the game for Thomas Sandstrom and Tony Granato. Mario Lemieux was MVP.

[Note: I remember being really sad after this game. I didn't want to believe that Mario was better than Gretzky, but it was all too aparent on this day. Mario scored 4goals, all of which Wayne was on the ice for.]

Saturday January 20, 1990

I stayed home all day. The first ever All-Star Skills Competition was on TV. The Campbell conference defeated Wales.

Friday January 19, 1990

Math test. I got 4/5 on the Science quiz. Buntman and I saw (snuck into) Internal Affairs at the Promenade. Awesome! There was a scene on a strip of Hollywood that Guy and I were hanging out on.

[Note: I still love that scene where Gere kicks Garcia's ass and then throws him his wife's panties and says "clean yourself up." Great flick!]

We had a quiz in History class. We played floor hockey at lunch. I had a goal and an assist. Spaghetti for lunch.

I got 10/10 on another Math quiz. We started reading MacBeth in English class. I went to debating club. Did homework and read after school.

Tuesday January 16, 1990

I got 8/10 on my Math quiz. We played floor hockey after school. I got 2 goals. Chili for lunch. I did homework right after school so that I could watch Nordiques 8 Jets 6.

We had a pop quiz in Accounting, and a French vocabulary test. We had Health Studies instead of Gym class. I watched Toronto beat Chicago 7-6.

Pop quiz in Math. We dissected a huge grasshopper in Science class. Chicken nuggets for lunch. I stayed in - did homework and watched some TV.

I got 93.3% on my Accounting exam. We played basketball in gym class. Dad had a car accident just around the corner from our house, on Torresdale.

Wednesday January 10, 1990

Hot dogs for lunch. I went home early (no clubs). Watched the Leafs lose 3-1 to the Isles.

Back to school. Sausages for lunch. We had an assembly in the morning. I got 75% on my History exam. Left early to go to a dentist appointment with Dr. Ross.

Sunday January 7, 1990

I stayed home and watched NFL football. Denver beat Pittsburgh 24-23. Great game. Elways rules! The Rams beat NY Giants 19-13. Another great game that went to OT. Jim Everett came through in the clutch.

Saturday January 6, 1990

Brian and I went to Mayfair and played squash and tennis. Played poker with Buntman, Sesel, Brad and Jordi at Brian's place. I slept over there.

Friday January 5, 1990

Jordi and I took the TTC to Sports Connection. I bought a bunch of rookie hockey cards (including Mike Bossy!). We met up with Brett Massey there. I had dinner at granny's place.

Thursday January 4, 1990

Sat at home. I watched Cheers and some sports special about the Vancouver vs. Pittsburgh series.

Wednesday January 3, 1990

Jordi, Cliff and I went to Maple Leaf Gardens and we met my favourite team - the Quebec Nordiques - including my favourite player Peter Stastny. We then grabbed Pizza Hut for lunch and walked around downtown. Later on we had dinner at Golden Griddle and then got people's stubs and went in to watch the 3rd period. The Leafs won 5-4.

[Note - before they ever implemented No Readmittance, you could get the ripped tickets of people leaving the Gardens and then go in and seat in their seats.]

Cliff and I went public skating at Clatworthy Arena. We grabbed McDonald's for dinner and then he slept over at our house.

New Year's Day! Played ping-pong. Made plans to go see the Quebec Nordiques on Wednesday. Cleaned my room.

New Year's Eve! Guy, Buntman and I ended up going to Nathan Phillips Square.

Ryan, Cliff and I went down to Maple Leaf Gardens to meet the visiting Boston Bruins. I spoke to Rob Cimetta, a former Crescent School student, about Mr. Davies. We grabbed McDonald's and watched the game back at Cliff's place.

I went back to Doublerink to play shini with Guy and Jordi. In the evening we went to The Promenade to see The Wizard. Ouch.

I went to Doublerink Arenas with Guy, Buntman and Sesel to play shini all day. Was exhausted and went to sleep early.

Wednesday December 27, 1989

Jordi and I went down to the Hilton Hotel to meet all the Detroit Red Wings players. We met just about everyone, including Steve Yzerman. We grabbed dinner downtown and then bought tickets to the game off of scalpers. It was a crazy game ... 7-7 after OT!

Boxing Day. Jordi and I went to National Gym to buy hockey equipment.

Monday December 25, 1989

Christmas Day. Jordi came back home from vacation. Massey, Guy , Jordi and I went to Centre Street Pond to play hockey. We all went back to Jordi's place after and hung out there.

Buntman, Garin, Ryan, Brad and I went toboganning at Cakebread Park.

The start of Hanukkah. I went to the Hilton hotel to meet the visiting Chicago Blackhawks. A bunch of us played tackle football in the snow at St. Rene. Guy, Brad, Buntman and I went to see Tango & Cash at The Promenade. Stupid movie but the 2 leads have decent chemistry.

Friday December 22, 1989

Stayed home all day. Cleaned my room. Watched Woody Allen's Take The Money and Run. This was Woody's first film as writer, director and star. It is also an early example of the mock-umentary we later saw in This Is Spinal Tap and other Christopher Guest work.

Thursday December 21, 1989

I went to see Dr. Ross, my dentist, for a regular cleaning. Jordi left for his vacation. Watched TV and played ping-pong.

Wednesday December 20, 1989

Jordi and I went to Peter's Hairstylists to get haircuts. I went to granny's for lunch after. I watched Toronto beat Detroit 4-2.

Tuesday December 19, 1989

JJ and I went to Canada Square to see The War of the Roses. I loved it! Watched TV and talked on the phone.

Monday December 18, 1989

I wrote my final exam of the term - Accounting. School's out for winter! I rented Tequila Sunrise and then watched the Leaf game. They beat the Blues 6-3.

Cliff and I went down to Maple Leaf Gardens in the afternoon to meet all of the Minnesota North Stars players. Then we walked down Yonge St. and went to the Eaton's Centre. We then went to the game and saw Brad and Sesel, Brian and Gary, and Ryan and Milberg.

I wrote the History exam. Went home and slept after the exam. After dinner I went back to studying.

I wrote the French exam in the morning, had lunch in the caf and then wrote the English B exam. Went home and studied for the History exam.

Rememberance Day. JJ and I went to the public library to do homework and study. I went to see Look Who's Talking at Bayview Village with Brad, Buntman, Sesel and Guy.

Friday November 10, 1989

No School: Mid-term Break. I went to Thornlea and caught up with a bunch of friends. I went over to Jordi's for dinner and then went to his (and Guy's) hockey game. Jordi got into a fight that led to a mini-brawl. Gail was not amused. We all went to Golden Star after.

[Note - Jordi and Guy were the only guys that played in Willowdale and not Thornhill. The game was at the Bayview Arena.]

I got 68% on my First-Aid Exam. Tonnes of homework. The Berlin Wall came down!

Wednesday November 8, 1989

Handed in my essay for Accounting class. We then had a pop quiz and I got 100%. Substitute teacher - Mr. James - for Phys-Ed; was really fun, we played football. I had dinner at JJ's house.
