Wrote a science test. We received our mark on the History presentation. It was a minor-disaster. Ms. Gibson felt it was racist and offered for us to do a new one of get a failing grade. I'm not sure I even knew what the word racist meant at the time. Oh well.

We finally did our presentation in history class. Our volleyball team played the grade 6 team, and won. My dad took Gabe & I to Massey Hall to see Yakov Smirnoff (pretty much the Borat of the 80's) only to have the show cancelled. Those Russians are about as reliable as their Lada's!

Watched Rendez-Vous 87 Game 2: Russia won 5-2. Fortunately nobody could tell that deep down I was actually rooting for Russia.

Just as an aside, I think the reason I wanted Russia to win was threefold: 1. They played a more skilled style of hockey. 2. As a kid of recent Russian immigrants, I was different from my mostly born in Canada friends. With all the embarrasing negative stereotypes about Russia during the Cold War, it was nice to be able to point to something positive about the country my parents were from (even though they were from the south, and consider themselves Jewish and not Russian). 3. I felt bad for the underdog. Not in a hockey sense, but the people. They were standing in lines for bread and suffered so much, I figured at least they would be able to maintain some kind of pride. They were clearly falling way behind the West in just about everything else. So it's not that I didn't love Canada, but a piece of me did secretly want the Russians to win.

Later that night I went over to Hart's. Slept over at his house. We made it a theme night and rented Friday The 13th.

Hart, Jordi and I went to Sports Connection to check out some hockey cards and other collectibles. Took the subway downtown. We walked along Yonge Street and I got totally run over by a biker. Not motorcycle. Bicycle. I remember thinking I was dead, coming to and hearing the guy crying 'my bike ... my bike'. Bastrad. Hart thought it was hilarious ... our friendship begins the declining stage. Eventually recovered. Went to Town & Country that night with Hart to see 'Outrageous Fortune' starring Shelley Long and Bette Midler. I'm pretty sure it didn't take the Oscar that year. Went to hang out at Lime Rickey's after (the one on Steeles - not the Eglington version in the pic).
